DUMFRIES AND GALLOWAY

This area of Scotland is beautiful, the climate is warmed by the Gulf Stream and everybody has the air of being relaxed and friendly. All the beauties of the area, the high granite mountains of the Galloway Hills, the Galloway Forest Park (which is the UK’s largest forest park), the Solway coast and the tranquil freshwater lochs are all easily accessible from the Auld Schoolhouse.

NO QUEUES IN GALLOWAY !

Dumfries and Galloway can be enjoyed either on foot, by bicycle or by car, there are some lovely walks around the varied coastline and when the tide is out you can walk across the sandy dunes. If you drive you will enjoy the ambling by-ways and quiet back roads. You will be surprised at the lack of queues and traffic jams!

GARDENS

Warmed by the Gulf Stream, the area enjoys a mild climate and has all year round attractions. There are over 30 Gardens to visit. Within 5 miles, you will find Logan Botanic Garden & Potting Shed Bistro, Logan House Gardens, Ardwall Gardens, Castle Kennedy Gardens (Lochinch Castle - Home of the Earl of Stair) and Glenwhan Gardens. You will also fine Port Logan  which was the location for the BBC drama 2000 Acres of Skye. Beach house rental at its best !

WHERE ARE THE CROWDS ?

Is there a place as beautiful as the Cotswolds? as stunning as the Lake District? as remote as the Hebrides? as wild as the Cornish Coast? It's all here in Dumfries and Galloway except one thing - the crowds !

FINE EATING OUT

Just a minute stroll along the road from our beach rental house takes you to one of the best 'eating pubs' in the area, the tighe-na-mara, Tigh Na Mara also do excellent carry out meals (Tig to go) and they have an all weather beer garden at rear of restaurant.

ART IN DUMFRIES & GALLOWAY

This region is renowned for its art and artists, and you may just come across magnificent works as you are out and about. The 'Spring Fing' opens over 50 artist studios to the public but art is part of our culture and will not be far away. Kirkcudbright is famous for the 'Scottish Colourists'. You can even find a Henry Moore or a Goldsworthy on a walk

CASTLES AND HISTORY

Dunskey Castle is one of the fine ancient buildings in this area of South West Scotland, there is a fantastic walk along the cliffs from this Castle into the bustling harbour of Portpatrick where you can have a fantastic meal in one of the pubs overlooking the harbour. Great peaceful location with a lovely view. The cottage has everything you would need for a relaxing holiday in the countryside away from it all. Warm and cosy with plenty of space, comfy beds and a well equipped kitchen. Plenty of local beaches, wildlife and scenery to see. Logan Gardens are lovely and the food is delicious. The red kite feeding at Laurieston is unique and quite a sight to see. The Logan Fish Pond is a peculiar tourist attraction and we were glad we went but it was a bit of a surreal entertaining experience.

March 2018

Booked this cottage on the last minute for my husbands birthday after our plans changed and so glad we did! The place is amazing and so relaxing, far too big for just the two of us but we happily rattled around in supreme comfort. Arriving on the only day it has ever snowed at the cottage I have never been so warm, we had to keep turning down the heating and only had the open fire on once. As everyone has already said the most fabulous thing is just to sit in the two chairs and watch the ever changing scenery and animals through the picture window, I think we only saw two cars pass by whilst we were there! Most of the local attractions were closed at this time of year so we spent our time walking and exploring the local coastline. Met some fabulous locals in Drummore and bought some crabs and lobster from a local fisherman. Loved it so much we've already booked again for September.

March 2018

We had a fantastic time at Knockinaam House! The house itself was spotless and everything you needed was there to hand. Beautiful wildlife surrounds you, and great walks nearby. We visited Stranraer often and used the swimming pool and local shops there. Portpatrick is beautiful to visit, as is Sandhead for a great beach option!

September 2017

The house was the perfect size for our group of eight and was lovely clean and modern. The kitchen was well kitted out with everything needed to cook for eight...the slow cooker was a god send! The location was beautiful and peaceful with a lovely sunset over the sea. Portpatrick was a short drive answer worth a visit. Would definitely recommend a stay!
